Polish Nobel Prize winner 'recovering well' after surgery

Polish poet Wisława Szymborska, who received the 1996 Nobel Prize for Literature, is recovering well after surgery, her secretary Michał Rusinek told a press conference this week.

The 88-year-old poet was operated on at a hospital in Kraków on Tuesday, and Mr Rusinek said that “everything is going well,” reported Rzeczpospolita.

Ms. Szymborska was awarded the Nobel Prize “for poetry that with ironic precision allows the historical and biological context to come to light in fragments of human reality”.

The poet's first book was published in 1949 and to date she has published around 350 poems.
